“Diaspora” is the Greek word meaning “to spread, or disperse.” It indicates a race or a mass of people, willingly or unwillingly, leaving their homeland for another country or area. Especially, Jews who were expelled and dispersed to all around world are referred to as Diaspora Jews. Today, there are numerous people who have moved away for a better life thanks to the development of transportation; therefore, “diaspora” does not refer only to Jewish people, but to these people as well. For this reason, many Koreans can be seen around the world. There are many Diaspora Koreans. In 2013, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported at least 2 million people living in China and in the United States, 900K in Japan, 200K in Canada, 170K each in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Australia, 80K in the Philippines and Vietnam, and many more in Brazil, United Kingdom, etc. In total, Koreans live in 30 different countries, but probably in more places as well.
